1. Why do you think he was feeling someone is always after him? Can you relate?
He felt like someone was after him because he couldn't escape the danger and problems in the war.

2. What is always on his mind?
The things that he sees are always on his mind, they haunt him.

3. Describe his sleeping situation?
He is sleeping in any tree that he finds to be comfortable.

4. Describe what food kept him alive?
He eats a strange fruit that he doesn't know what it is. It is shaped like lemon and it was mixed with yellow and red.Inside it had a crusty watery seed.

5. Describe the medicine grandpa made. What does it do?
He made a medicine from ink made from another medicine. It helped him memorize important things before exams.

6. What was the most difficult part being in the forest?
The most difficult part of being in the forest is the loneliness.

7. Tell me a time when you wished you could stop thinking but you couldn’t?
Every night when I go to sleep i want to stop thinking.

8. Describe his life in the forest?
His life in the forest is very lonely. He sleeps in trees and tries to avoid the dangerous animals.

9. What drove his spirit alive?
I think the memories that he has of his family and his life before the war keeps his spirit alive.

10. How do they differentiate from what tribe each person is from?

Marks on their cheeks and their features showed what tribes they were from.

11. What does this mean, pg.55 “Our innocence had been replaced by the fear and we had become monsters”?
He means that they are no longer innocent kids, because everyone is scared of them.

12. Why were men with machetes after them often?
Because these were men that were trying to protect their villages.

ch. 7 quest

1. Describe the attack of Kamator?
The attack happened very unexpectedly. they all went to hide in the bush.

2. Who is Mam? What did the Rebels do to him?

The imam is like a village priest. The imam was in the middle of a prayer when the rebels came. They tied him up and demanded to know what parts of the forest the people where hiding in and he refused to tell them. They tied him up to an iron post and burned his body.

2. How did he and his brother get separated?
They were in different places when the attack occurred and he didnt have time to go back and look for him.

3. Can you relate? Tell me when you were separated from your family or someone you care for?
The closest i can relate to being separated from someone is when my dad whent to prison when I was a little girl.

4. What was his main source of diet?

He collected oranges at the different villages and he sometimes came across cassava farms. He also finally climbed a coconut tree.

ch. 6 quest.

-What are the advantages and disadvantages of being in a group of six boys?

People were scared of the boys because they thought they were rebels. People would try to hurt them to protect their families. However being a group of six boys gave them a better chance of escaping their day-to-day troubles.

-How did they avoid confrontation with people in villages?

The boys walked through bushes to avoid causing chaos in villages.

-Who are the muscular men and why are they taking them?

These men were voluntary guards of their village. They were taking the boys back to the village because the chief ordered them to.

-Who saved the boys from being drowned?

A young boy from Mattru Jong vouched for the boys. He told the chief that he had saw the dance performances.

-Explain the internal conflict going on that involves his brother Jr.

Ismael wants his brother to comfort him in his time of need.

-What information did the boys get? Where were they going?

The boys were told that Gibrilla’s aunt was in a village thirty miles from where they were. They were going to that village.

-What were they assigned to do in Kamator?

They were appointed as watchmen in exchange for food and a place to sleep.

-As time passes what was the boy’s new job?

They became farmers later.

-Describe the backbreaking work of clearing the bush?

To clear the bush they had to swing machetes and axes at the trees and palms that had to be cut down to the ground so they wouldn’t grow fast.

-What task was next after clearing the bush?

After the clearing, they let the bush dry and they set it on fire. Next they had to plant cassava.

-Why did Ismeal get into a lot of fights in school?

Ismeal got into a lot of fights in school because the other kids would tease him because his parents were separated.

-How long did they farm for? Why did it eventually go to ruins?

They farmed for three months. The rebels eventually did come and everyone left leaving the crops to waste.
