automatons- a mechanical figure or contrivance constructed to act as if by its own motive power; robot. The prisoners went about their day like automatons.
midst- the position of anything surrounded by other things or parts, or occurring in the middle of a period of time, course of action, etc. In the midst of the huge crowd he found her.
famished- extremely hungry. After the hike we were all famished.
parched- After her jog, she was parched.
indeterminate- not clear; vague. The dinner was set for an indeterminate time in the evening.
illusion- something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality. The seasons change so quickly, like an illusion.
condemned- to express an unfavorable or adverse judgment on; indicate strong disapproval of; censure. The king of the tribe condemned the thief to death.
withered- to shrivel, fade, decay. The rose slowly withered away.
petrified- to paralyze with horror, astonishment, or any other strong emotion. The bear petrified the campers.
distress- great pain, anxiety, or sorrow. it was clear the boat was in distress.
staggering- to walk, move, or stand unsteadily. the drunks started staggering out of the bar around two in the morning.
encumbrance- something burdensome. Poverty is life long encumbrance.
semblance- the barest trace. There wasn't a semblance of truth in the story.
jostled- to brush, push, or shove against or elbow roughly or rudely. She got jostled at the concert.
bereaved- greatly saddened by the death of a loved one. The widow was greatly bereaved at the funeral.
rabbi- The chief religious official of a synagogue; Jewish scholar or teacher.
