ch. 5 questions

part 1:

1. It seems that the Nazis have placed themselves in God’s role. Eliezer has decided that the Nazis’ actions mean that God is not present in the concentration camps, and thus praying to him is foolish. What examples display his religions rebel for his faith in his GOD? ( at least 5 complete sentences)

An example of Eliezer's diminishing faith is "Who are you, my god, compared to this afflicted crowd, proclaiming You to their faith, thier anger, their revolt? what oes you greatness mean, lord of the universe, in the face of all this weekness, this decomposition, and this decay? Why do You still trouble thier minds, their crippled bodies?" (pg. 63)

2. Eliezer has been separated from his father to work in the building unit. He worries that his father will not pass the selection and he may never see his father again. In this section how is the relationship between him and his father? Has it changed? How can you relate to his relationship? Is there someone in your life and that you have a similar relationship where you depend on one another and the person will sacrifice anything for you? Tell me your relationship. ( 8 sentences)

In this section Elie & his father have a good relationship, despite them being in separate blocks. I have a similar relation ship with my mother. We do depend on each other for different things. I love her & i know that she would sacrifice anything for me, including her life. My relationship with my mother is very special. She is not only my mother, but she is my best friend and the one person i can tell anything.

3. Elie escapes death on so many occasions. Tell me in DETAIL incidents where he has manage to escape death. give me the page number as well. Why or how do you think he has? Do you think it is fate or maybe just luck, explain your thoughts. (5 sentences)
Elie escapes death every time there is a selection. In this chapter, they make the Jews run to see if they were weak. If they were, they got there number written down. Elie ran fast and his number wasn't written down. (pg.68)


4. pick out 3 new voc words define, sentences and picture

Rosh Hashanah- a Jewish high holy day that marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year. The family came together to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.

atonement- satisfaction or reparation for a wrong or injury; amends. When he had an argument with his girlfriend, he brought her flowers as his atonement to make up.

Part 2 :

1. How was the day different of any other? (Rosh Hashanah)
It as different because it was the end of a New Year.

2. Find 3 examples that show that elie’s faith is questioned.
Elie questions his faith when everyone is praying "but why should I bless Him?... because He had thousands of children burned is His pits? Because He kept six crematories working night and day, on Sundays and feast days?"(pg. 64)

3. How was the solemn service?
The prayer service was very awkward to read. Elie seems so confuse and angry ant the same time. It seems like he is just stuck and he doesn't know what to think.

4. What was Yom Kipper?
Yom Kipper is the Day of Atonement. They are supposed to fast.

5. Why does Elie not fast?
Elie feels like if he fasts then he would surely die faster.

6. Why do you think he has a feeling of great void?
Elie feels a great void because he didn't fast. When they fast they are doing it for God. Elie feels like he did something wrong.

7. Where was elie transferred to? what was his new job?

8. What do the SS man do when they found a weak one?
They wrote down the numbers of the weak Jews.

9. Describe what selection is like?
During this selection, they had to run before the SS officers.It is very scary for them, not knowing if they are going to be written down or not.

10. Who was Dr. Mengele?
Dr. Mengele was the one writing down the numbers of the weak ones.

11. Why was his dad in panic?
His dad twas written down and kept behind at the camp for another selection.

12. What was the inheritance? Why would he need those things?
The inheritance ids a knife and a spoon. Elie could probably sell them if he ever escapes for some money if they were silver or something.

13. Did his dad live? Who was not so lucky with the selection?
His dad did live, but Akiba Drumer was a victim of the selection.

14. What is going on with his foot?
His foot was swelling because of the cold.

15. What journey were they going to go on?
They were being evacuated because the front was moving closer.

16. Why do they wash/clean their area before leaving?
They clean before they live because they SS wanted the liberating army to "realize that men were living here and not pigs.

17. Based upon this chapter, how can you describe elie's dad, his attitude, and his relationship with his son? examples
Elie and his father have a good relationship in this chapter, and his father is willing to sacrifice anything for his son. An example is when he gives him the knife and spoon.

18. Eliezer’s foot swells up, and he undergoes an operation. While he is in the hospital recovering, the rumor of the approaching Russian army gives him new hope. Tell me who he meets in the hospital, what happens, and why did he not stay in the hospital to heal?
He meets a man in the hospital. He doesn't stay in the hospital because his neighbor told him that all the invalids would be killed.
