ch. 8 part one & two

1. How does Wiesel treat his father during the journey to Buchenwald and later during
his dad's illness? How does Wiesel’s link to his father affect his will to survive?

2. Given their life or death situation, do you believe Wiesel’s attitude toward his father was understandable?
Explain your reactions

3. Elie weeps (cries) several times in the book; explain when and why. Explain one time he does not weep when it would be expected.

4.What feelings and thoughts went through your mind as you read about Wiesel’s final experiences
as a German prisoner? What would you say if you could talk to him about this time in
his life? What would you want him to explain to you?

part 2:

1. What fascinated Elie,why?
The idea of having a hot bath fascinated him.

2. Was it easy to take showers, describe?
It was not. It was cramped like every other situation they had been in.

3. Describe how the father is now, what can you say about his spirit and his will to live, how has it changed? Example
Elie's father is no giving up. He feels so weak that he thinks he cannot go on any longer. Example: before, they would support each other.

4. Why does elie mean he says, “ I felt that I as not arguing with him, but with death itself.”?

5. Why was elie ashamed of? What was he thinking about?
Elie was ashamed of himself because he was thinking of taking one of the prisoners advice to take his father's ration and to basically abandon him.

6. What didn’t father eat anything?
They werent giving the sick ones food, because they saw it as wasting food because they were going to die soon anyways.

7. Describe what is happening to Elie’s father.
He is very sick. He is slowly dying.

8. How are you suppose to live in a concentration camp?
In those conditions you have to live for yourself, and have no feelings. You have to be selfish.

9. What was the last memory of elie’s father?
The last memory he has of his father, is seeing his bloody face and fractured skull.

10. What happened to Elie’s father?
He got hit with a truncheon and he is dying.

11. Did elie cry? Why or why not?
He does not. I think it is because he feels relieved for his father.

12. What does he mean “free at last”?

I think he is referring to his father being free from the suffering, but he might be referring to the burden of his father on himself.
