- I think seeing the child hanging made them all think of there own families. when Elizer says that God is hanging on the gallows, I think he is referring to his own beliefs and that they are also dying. Elizer is losing his faith. He soesnt understand how God could allow this tohappen. I think Elizer is going to become cold and callous. It seems like he is already becomming numb to it all. everything he has seen is to much for him to bear.

Yes. Because Elizer was tired of seeing his father get beat.

One day Elie got in Idek's way and I Idek beat Elie until he was bloody all over. Idek is very temperamental & his mood changes quickly.

The girl is an alleged "french girl", who we later find out was Jew. She had fake documents. She gave Elie a piece of bread, wiped his forehead and gave him some kind, encouraging words.

Elie felt like his dad should have done a better job in marching in order to not get beat.

Franek, noticed it and when EIlie refused to give it up, Franek took it out on Elie's father. So Elie finally agreed to give it up. It was removed with a rusty spoon.
16. What was Elie’s consequence for walking in on Idek and a girl?
Elie recieved 25 lashes from a whip for walking in on Idek.
17. Why didn’t people escape during the raids?
No one tried to escape during the raids because the SS had orders to kill anyone outside of the blocks.

They were not afraid during the raid. They were not affriad of that death, because a German defeat would be revenge for them.

Elie responds by stating the God is hanging on the gallows.

I believe that Elie's faith is diminishing. He want to believe in god, but he just doesnt understand
how all of this could happen if there was a God.

The death of innocents represent his faith also dying.
