ch 8 vocab

emerged- to come forth into view or notice, as from concealment or obscurity. A creepy ship emerged from the fog.

hillock- a small hill. During the winter, we rode sleds down the hillocks.

timid- lacking in self-assurance, courage, or bravery; easily alarmed; timorous; shy. The nerdy boy was very timid.

tiers- one of a series of rows or ranks rising one behind or above another, as of seats in an amphitheater, boxes in a theater, guns in a man-of-war, or oars in an ancient galley.At the opera, we were sitting a few tires behind my parents.

beseeching- to beg eagerly for; solicit. the transients beseech for spare change.

dysentery- an infectious disease marked by inflammation and ulceration of the lower part of the bowels, with diarrhea that becomes mucous and hemorrhagic. After visiting the unsanitary country, we were struck with dysentery.

invalids- an infirm or sickly person. In the prison, all the invalids were housed separately.

feverish- having fever. The baby was slightly feverish.

spasmodically- pertaining to or of the nature of a spasm; characterized by spasms. While having a seizure, the girl shook spasmodically.

summons- an authoritative command, message, or signal by which one is summoned.

conscience- the inner sense of what is right or wrong in one's conduct or motives, impelling one toward right action

delirious- the inner sense of what is right or wrong in one's conduct or motives, impelling one toward right action

pleaded- to use arguments or persuasions, as with a person, for or against something. She pleaded for him to leave.

cauldrons- a large kettle or boiler. They were brewing up cauldrons of the potion.
